Kigali International Airport
This large, modern hotel in central Kigali lies just 10 kilometres from Kigali International Airport, so it’s the perfect stopover before returning home. It’s a large hotel, popular for weddings and conferences (held fortunately in a large stand-alone conference and events centre). The rooms are quiet though, so take some down time, enjoy the varied cuisine at the restaurants, wander around the lush gardens and laze around the pool. And do visit the blissful spa. If you’re simply overnighting, you’ll probably only have time to enjoy the food, the pool and maybe a treatment at the spa. Explore Kigali (ask for advice at reception), visit the sobering Kigali Genocide Memorial and admire the bright artworks at the Inema Gallery. For families with young children, there’s also a baby pool.

There aren’t many camps that have a location as wonderful as Bukima. Meaning ‘The place where there are monkeys’, the camp certainly lives up to its name and in fact, goes one better with its proximity to the utterly magnificent mountain gorillas of Virunga National Park. Views are phenomenal with Mount Mikeno and Nyiragongo taking centre position and even though it’s not glamping, we think everything about Bukima Tented Camp is pretty much perfect. Originally built as a base camp for the researchers of Virunga, Bukima is modest and simple, yet full of charm, warmth and everything you would expect from a traditional tented camp. A cosy mess tent is the main meeting point and comes complete with safari chairs, an incredibly well-stocked bar and large dining table where hearty three-course feasts appear like clockwork for lunch and dinner. Outside, guests gather by the campfire for morning tea and eggs and in the evening to share epic gorilla-trekking tales.

Not only is Virunga National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s also one of the most beautiful national parks on the continent, home to snow-capped mountains and glistening glaciers, active volcanoes and endless jungles. Mikeno Lodge is a rather luxurious hideaway in the grounds of the park’s headquarters. 12 Congolese-chic bungalows boast ensuite bathrooms, hot water and epic fireplaces to fight off the ubiquitous mists and a terrific team of staff who will do just about anything to make your stay as unforgettable as it should be. Gorilla treks are one of the main activities and they are, of course, superb in every way. There’s plenty more on offer too; tours of the gorilla orphanage, park headquarters and anti-poaching units can be arranged, as can chimpanzee treks and hikes to the top of the magnificent Nyiragongo Volcano. And if you feel like some timeout? Grab a pair of binos and watch the birds flit past and the monkeys play in the trees.

Nyiragongo is an adrenalin-fuelled traveller’s dream. If hiking the slopes of an active volcano and sleeping in a hut perched on the rim of one of the world’s largest lava lakes sets your heart thumping, then this is the adventure for you. Watch the bubbling cauldron – from a safe distance – and get a sense of the Earth’s fiery heart as the lava heaves, breathes and pops with hot gases. Stay overnight to watch the spectacle in the dark, and rise to appreciate the wide view from above the clouds before descending. Mount Nyiragongo is a spectacular volcano, and hiking its slopes leads from the tropical forest to the icy summit and its bubbling lava lake. The hike is fairly challenging, depending on your level of fitness, and the group moves at the pace of its slowest member. Enjoy the experience, knowing that you’re in good hands, as the rangers know the mountain intimately enough to see that you’re safe and get the best observation. Truly unforgettable, we guarantee it!

Around 15 minutes boat ride from the harbor of Goma, croissant-shaped Tchegra Island sits smack bang in the middle of Lake Kivu, a collapsed volcanic caldera that’s now partly submerged in shimmering blue water. Return your heart rate to normal with a few days here after gorilla trekking in the Virungas or climbing Nyiragongo – the island is a haven of tranquility and with nothing but the eight tents of Tchegera Island Camp, you can expect peaceful nights and the most wonderful kind of silence in the stunning natural surroundings. There’s no denying that Lake Tchegera is a camp that’s fond of relaxation, and days are for ambling around the island on the pathways, dipping your toes in the cool water or spending time with your binos and the excellent birdlife. If you’re still full of beans, hire a kayak and explore the hidden corners, or paddle-board across the mill-pond water – the area in front of camp is wonderfully protected from the elements.
